Why did the people of Iran overthrow the Shah and end their ancient monarchy?

Religious fervor and the desire to oust who was seen as a puppet of the Western powers. All non-Muslim influences were seen as contaminating Iran's culture.Add to that the perception that Shah Reza Pahlavi was also seen a a brutal, oppressive, corrupt and overly extravagant person, and the ingredients for a governmental overthrow are ripe.
