Can you bring me up-to-date on satellite radio?

I am looking into getting my bf satellite radio for his b-day in May. From what I gather Sirius and XM are together now and I should be buying a Sirius radio? Which model is better? I'd like something that is reliable, that is to be installed in his truck. He's a music lover, not so much into sports on the radio.
