Whats the best/easiest way to get rid of a large apple tree? ?

We have chopped it down to a smallish trunk (6ft), and dug out quite a lot of soil around it, but the trunk is so thick - is there an easy way of getting rid of the tree once and for all? Many thanks in anticipation.
